Fitting a 3-Blade Flexofold Propeller

If you have followed this blog you have seen me remove my old fixed 2-blade propeller.  After removing that propeller I discovered that the previous owner did not use a proper stainless steel shaft key, but used a steel key which had rusted and expanded.  I removed it and cleaned all rust.  Here the shaft ready for mounting new parts (in this case it is a standard ISO 30mm shaft but with a non standard key).

The Flexofold instructions are very detailed and very easy to follow!  Almost all your need comes in the delivery package.  However you need a wrench and get a new bottle of Locktight.

For starters move the propeller hub onto the shaft without the key in place to mark the location the propeller should be when installed with the key in place.

Next insert the key.

Now slide the hub over the key onto the shaft and screw on the center nut.

Next use your wrench and one of the loose blades to prevent the shaft from rotating.  You must tighten as much as you can.

Make sure to use any of the lock tight products for the lock nut.

As indicated before, most parts come with the Flexofold delivery package.  For the next step, adding the blades find the 3 large bolts and required lock screws.  Select one of the blades and add it to the hub.

Repeat the process with all blades. You will notice as you add the other blades that you need to pivot the blades back and forward in order to get them locked into their “teeth”.

After you have mounted all 3 blades you need to add the cover plate.

Add the shaft lock screw now.  You could have added it also earlier.

As a final step add the zinc to the hub.

Done.  The propeller looks like this.

I normally add a rope cutter.

Flexofold propellers are very easy to fit.  Installation time about 20 – 30 minutes for first time installation.
